Insight gained: just how resilient, understanding, and empathetic humans can be. Concern: Decoupling of direct experience from a credible learning experience. 13:18:01 From Catie to Kelly Cerialo(Privately) : Just put it up there - psychic! I forgot to start recording here, but I'll note that I'm recording the follow-up conversation afterward, which I'll then post on Canvas - her PPT is at the PSC Faculty Learning Center Canvas site. :) 13:18:21 From Kelly Cerialo to Catie(Privately) : Thanks! 13:21:50 From Catie : FYI, in case you want to reference Jessamyn's PPT during our upcoming conversation (or later on!), it is now available in the PSC Faculty Learning Center Canvas site. 13:24:57 From Sara Dougherty : Q1: Having to respond to my students hardest questions, comments, responses… “My home is not a safe environment.” “I’ve lost my primary care-taker during covid-19.” “Education is not as important right now with the global pandemic taking place.” 13:25:29 From Sara Dougherty : Q2: I always wondered what online teaching was like and whether I would enjoy it or not… I don’t. 13:27:27 From Mike Beccaria : Recommended books and current availability: 13:27:30 From Mike Beccaria : Part 1: Minds Online: http://library.paulsmiths.edu:2048/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=nlebk&AN=868677&site=eds-live&scope=site Small Teaching Online Intentional Tech The Blended Course Design Workbook : A Practical Guide http://library.paulsmiths.edu:2048/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=nlebk&AN=1421140&site=eds-live&scope=site 13:27:37 From Mike Beccaria : Part 2: The Spark of Learning : Energizing the College Classroom with the Science of Emotion http://library.paulsmiths.edu:2048/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=nlebk&AN=1350065&site=eds-live&scope=site How humans learn : the science and stories behind effective college teaching Physical Book Collection: http://library.paulsmiths.edu:2048/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=cat07832a&AN=psc.70250&site=eds-live&scope=site Small Teaching Creating Wicked Students 13:27:44 From Mike Beccaria : Part 3: The skillful teacher The Missing Course Connected Teaching Geeky Pedagogy http://library.paulsmiths.edu:2048/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=nlebk&AN=2199067&site=eds-live&scope=site 13:30:45 From Deb Naybor : I've learned that my students face a lot more problems than I ever imagined. 13:31:12 From Catie : Do you see a new valuing or reevaluation of care work - and not just self-care, but the informal interactions that happen on a daily basis and now must be intentional? Much of this was not necessarily known or acknowledged before. 13:33:00 From janet m : Catie, can you give an example of what you mean by 'care work' with students? 13:33:59 From Rebecca Romeo : One hard thing was feeling I had to be upbeat all the time, but worse than that, always available. Setting boundaries was difficult. Knowing students were working with limited resources, sharing computers, etc. I felt I had to reply right away to them, even if they were asking questions I had just answered. 13:34:13 From Catie : I mean those conversations we might have with each other, whether it's about an issue with a student or in the classroom - sometimes emotional support, and often a form of problem solving. 13:41:15 From Rebecca Romeo : It goes to Maslow - I know it's hard to care about paragraph structure when you are in survival mode, or you have just buried a pair of grandparents. 13:42:54 From Craig Milewski : had same experience as Glenn in one of my courses - became about opinions rather than a scholarly treatment of material 13:45:14 From Deb Naybor : I had great success when I had students interact with family members...interviews, teach them what they are learning, etc. 13:45:44 From Rebecca Romeo : How am I going to make my mortgage payments? 13:45:53 From Mwaskiewicz : interaction with students is what makes teaching enjoyable to me. I fear losing my motivation to keep doing my best (Justin) 13:46:33 From sarah bogdanovitch : Not being able to motivate students to engage in their learning experience 13:47:05 From Kelly Cerialo : Concerns for the fall - 1) Student retention and engagement 2) Maintaining academic rigor given the context. 13:49:18 From mbennett2 : how to teach hands on lab skill online???? 13:50:26 From Karen Edwards : Students did not want to do online learning this semester and they won't for ne-xt the challenge will be how to change their receptivity to learn 13:50:53 From Mike Beccaria : Teaching Science Online : Practical Guidance for Effective Instruction and Lab Work - http://library.paulsmiths.edu:2048/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=nlebk&AN=1302143&site=eds-live&scope=site 13:54:24 From Rebecca Romeo : One success that I experienced was the creativity of my Speech class students in recording and uploading their presentations. 13:55:58 From Jorie Favreau : I second Rebi's- having the opportunity to record presentations and see themselves definitely seemed to improve their presentations skills 13:58:49 From mbennett2 : maybe once a month online meeting with a student built in to syllabus? 13:59:41 From Mike Beccaria : got to duck out and go to another meeting. Thanks Jessamyn and all! So much good here... 14:00:05 From Kelly Cerialo : Thank you! 14:00:15 From Craig Milewski : thanks! 14:00:15 From Joseph Henderson : Thank you.
