Course Description:
This course is designed to introduce students to the management functions of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. Management theory is examined from an historical perspective and principles are applied using the systems approach and contingency as related to contemporary management practice. Students focus on industry examples and problem solving.
Objectives:
- Define the nature of business and the management functions of planning, organizing and staffing, leading and directing, and controlling
- Examine effective decision-making and communications skills for managers of businesses and non-business institutions
- Describe the concepts of Ethics and Social Responsibility and how these affect decisions
- Compare Management by Objective, Total Quality Management and other past and currently practiced management theories and techniques
- Research and explain the need to manage for growth and innovation
